The OnePlus 15 took criticism for its underwhelming camera system — particularly the telephoto. OnePlus appears to have listened. The OnePlus 16 is shaping up as a significant overcorrection in the best possible way, with a 200MP periscope telephoto headlining what looks like the most ambitious camera upgrade the series has attempted.

October 2026 is the expected China launch window.

Key Points

  • OnePlus 16 reportedly features a 200MP Samsung HP5 periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.56-inch sensor — up from a 50MP 1/2.76-inch unit on the OnePlus 15
  • Digital Chat Station tips the device may share imaging hardware with the OPPO Find N6 across the BBK ecosystem
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975) confirmed by Digital Chat Station — the higher-tier 2nm chip with LPDDR6 RAM support
  • 9,000mAh battery with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging also leaked — alongside a 240Hz BOE X5 OLED display
  • Expected price increase of approximately 25% over OnePlus 15 — October China launch, November global release

The Telephoto Upgrade Is the Priority Fix

OnePlus 15's telephoto was a genuine weak point — a 50MP sensor at 1/2.76-inch that left zoom photography trailing every serious rival. The OnePlus 16 reportedly addresses this directly with a 200MP Samsung HP5 at 1/1.56-inch in the periscope position. That's a dramatically larger sensor doing zoom work, and the HP5 specifically has proven itself in OPPO's Find X9 series.
The same HP5 sensor appears in the OPPO Find N6's main camera. On the OnePlus 16 it handles telephoto duties — suggesting lossless zoom performance at focal lengths the OnePlus 15 couldn't approach cleanly.
Dual 200MP sensors are also being rumored — one for the primary, one for the periscope — though sources are more consistent on the telephoto spec than the primary camera configuration.

Everything Else Got Upgraded Too

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro — the higher-tier SM8975 variant rather than the standard Gen 6 — puts the OnePlus 16 at the absolute top of Qualcomm's 2026 mobile silicon. LPDDR6 RAM support comes with that chip, adding bandwidth that the standard Gen 6 doesn't offer.
Nine thousand milliamp hours with 120W charging is a battery combination that makes the current generation look conservative. A 240Hz BOE X5 OLED display caps a spec sheet that reads like OnePlus decided to stop holding back.

The Price Reality

A 25% price increase over the OnePlus 15 is the uncomfortable part of this story. OnePlus built its reputation on near-flagship performance at accessible prices. If that price trajectory continues, the OnePlus 16 moves into territory where it competes directly with Samsung and Apple on cost — not just on specs.
Whether the camera upgrade, battery capacity, and chipset choice justify that premium is the question October will answer.
