Samsung and OpenAI have agreed on a letter of intent for a new partnership. The signing took place in Seoul at Samsung’s headquarters with executives from both sides present. The goal is to combine Samsung’s hardware and infrastructure with OpenAI’s AI expertise. Both companies said the partnership will help expand global data center capacity and explore new technologies.

Key Points

  1. Samsung and OpenAI signed an LOI for strategic partnership in AI.
  2. Samsung Electronics to supply high-performance DRAM for OpenAI’s Stargate project.
  3. Samsung SDS to co-develop AI data centers and offer enterprise AI services.
  4. Samsung C&T and Heavy Industries to work on floating data centers.
  5. Partnership supports South Korea’s goal of becoming a top AI nation.

Samsung affiliates step in

Samsung Electronics will act as a memory supplier for OpenAI’s Stargate project. The company expects demand to reach almost 900,000 DRAM wafers per month. It will also look at providing logic chips, foundry services, and advanced packaging for AI workloads.

Samsung SDS plans to join in the design and running of AI data centers. It may also provide consulting to firms that want to adopt OpenAI’s models. In addition, SDS has signed on as a reseller of ChatGPT Enterprise in South Korea.
Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries are exploring a different approach. The two affiliates will study the idea of floating data centers. The model could cut cooling costs, save land, and help reduce emissions. Floating power plants and control centers are also under discussion.

Broader plans

Samsung said the agreement supports South Korea’s goal of becoming one of the top three AI nations. Internally, the group is also testing how ChatGPT can be used across its workforce.
For now, the deal is an LOI (Letter of Intent), but both sides see it as a first step. With Samsung’s scale and OpenAI’s software, the partnership could set up a new model for how AI infrastructure is built worldwide.
