As part of the #MakeInIndia initiative by the Indian government, Xiaomi will be manufacturing its Redmi 2 Prime (aka Redmi 2 with
2GB RAM) wholly in India.
The Make In India initiative is to encourage manufacture in India. The government will in turn offer incentives to such manufacturers. Manu Kumar Jain, India head for Xiaomi, revealed that the Redmi 2 Prime has actually been in manufacture since a few weeks.
The Redmi 2 Prime is priced at 6,999 INR (US$109) in the country. It comes with a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC and has 2GB of RAM... which is the differentiating factor between this and the 'regular' Redmi 2 (
review).
The Redmi 2 Prime is being manufactured in the holy city of Tirupati in the Andhra Pradesh state. At the event in Vishakhapatnam, Xiaomi even roped in Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, CM of Andhra Pradesh. It has been learnt that it is Foxconn doing the manufacturing for Xiaomi. Foxconn has been out of action in India since it stopped making
phones for Nokia earlier this year.
