REDMI may be preparing a major camera upgrade for its next flagship phone. A new leak says the device has a 50MP periscope camera with around 3x optical zoom. It is also said to use a large 1/1.95-inch sensor, which could help it capture more detail in low light.
The phone is still in testing, and its name has not been shared. However, the leak points to a REDMI flagship with Qualcomm’s next top chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

A larger sensor for better zoom shots
The camera is the main detail in this report. A 50MP sensor is not new on its own, but its size matters. At 1/1.95 inches, this sensor could gather more light than many small zoom cameras.
The phone is said to offer about 3x optical zoom. That range is useful for portraits and closer shots of distant objects. It also gives users more choice without relying on digital zoom, which often cuts image detail.
The exact camera setup is still unknown. We do not yet know which main or ultra-wide sensors REDMI plans to use.

A 2nm chip is also tipped
The same leak links the phone to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. The chip is expected to use a 2nm process and could power REDMI’s next high-end model in the first half of 2027.
Earlier reports also pointed to REDMI testing four phones with screens close to seven inches and very large batteries. It is not clear if all four will reach stores or share the same launch date.
My take
REDMI seems ready to push its flagship phones further into camera territory. A large zoom sensor could make a real difference, especially if the company gets image quality right.
Still, I would not judge this phone by its chip or megapixel count alone. The main camera, image processing, and final price will matter just as much. For now, this is an early leak, and Xiaomi has yet to confirm the phone or its specs.
