Chinese smartphones are as powerful well spec’d and affordable thanks to Taiwanese chip maker Mediatek’s excellent processors, Rockchips is now stepping up its game to take on the current leader.
Taiwanese chip maker Mediatek currently hold quite a monopoly in the Chinese smartphone market. Almost every Android phone launched in China (with very few exceptions) run a Mediatek chip of some sort. With foreign phone makers such as Sony also using MTK processor and the success of the new Mediatek tablet SoC’s the Taiwan based tech giant look to have everything sewn up!

Perhaps for not much longer though as Chinese chip maker Rockchips are preparing to release new processor models which will support new and innovative features, possibly meaning Rockchip powered phones aren’t to far away.
The specifics aren’t quite clear, but Rockchips have announced that they will be supplying Lenovo, HP and Toshiba with processor and will likely be hoping to add more customers to their portfolio.

They are already supplying ASUS, so they are definitely making inroads to the higher tier manufacturers.
However, I really hope they will one up Mediatek by being opensource friendly and providing source code to the community. Rockchip need to realize that most Chinese manufacturers cannot be trusted to release timely updates (if at all!), so this burden, unfortunately, falls onto the community. However we can’t do much without complete sources.
The quadcore a12 is going to be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than currently planned 8core a7 mediatek due to big.LITTLE. (And so would mediatek’s own Tablet chipset, which would be even better because it’s Dual A15/dual A7
You also get a series 6 Mali GPU which means chainfire3d since it’s acutally open like that. I would love for rockchip to make phones, especially if they’ve got great connectivity.(LTE and nonsense like that).
I have two tablets (N80 IPS & Teclast P88) running Rockhip and everything’s fine. It run smooth in Real Racing 3 and NFS.

We additionally need 850 (band 5) and more importantly, 1700+2100 MHz (band 4 AWS) as well to work over here.
The RK3066 was a game changer as far as Chinese chipsets are concerned. It is good to see the acceptance among western brands as well (HP Slate 7). I’m waiting for my RK3188 based tablet which I should get in the coming fortnight, which I’m sure will be a powerhouse. The idea of RK chipsets with on-board modems is an insanely amazing idea, at least as far as I’m concerned. I’d give my money right now just for the promise 😀

Yep, it’s unfortunate HiSilicon gone quite for so long, their SoCs were on par with MTK’s couple years ago.
