Xiaomi’s 2nd wearable in the works

xiaomi mi band review

If you read our review of the Xiaomi Mi Band you will know how much we enjoy the simple little device, well an update may well be on the way.

It’s Hugo Barra who has tipped us off again , this time via his Weibo account in China. The VP of Xiaomi posted that the team responsible for the original Mi Band have a big announcement ahead of the Chinese Spring Festival.

Gizchina News of the week

As it’s the wearable division of Xiaomi who are making the announcement it sounds plausible that a 2nd generation Xiaomi Mi Band is ready to be released.

What we like about the current Mi Band is the long battery life, and simple to use features. We hope that Xiaomi can keep those aspects of the bracelet but perhaps add a small display for notifications and the time, but more importantly improve the wrist strap.

From personal experience I have found the Mi Band’s strap to unfasten easily after prolonged use, and even Eduardo over on GizChina.es managed to loose a Mi Band recently due to the strap design.

What I’m waiting for is a smartwatch from Xiaomi. I’ve currently got the MiBand and don’t get me wrong, I love it, but that’s why I want them to make a smartwatch. You can call me a fan boy and all that but if I were to buy a smartwatch from anyone, I’m pretty sure it’d be from Xiaomi.

I managed to squeeze just over 2 months from my MiBand and only just had to charge it the second time yesterday. I bought my Xiaomi MiBand just over 2 months ago and charged it when I first got it and used it everyday wherever I was and it works really well. I work in a PC retail store and I often get customers ask me to show them how smart bands work so I show them my MiBand and they end up buying a smart band themselves. It’s a shame we don’t sell the Xiaomi MiBand though. I personally don’t have any issues with the clasp and I take it off daily for my morning shower.

My only main criticism is sometimes when I wake up in the night or early morning to go to the loo it hasn’t tracked me going back to sleep and that my band has ended up with a few cuts and scratches (I’m not sure how!). The actual MiBand unit itself is in spotless condition though without a single scratch.

Barra hinted at a watch before and now that Apple has one they might go ahead and try to copy it without making it too obvious. Doubt they got batter ideas to come up with something good or at least original.

Pricing will be interesting , they could go for 299 or 399 CNY or pull a Note Pro stunt and price it at 999CNY.

If it was 299/399 RMB that would be autobuy lol. I wouldn’t even care about what it did and just buy it. At 999 RMB it would have to be pretty perfect for me to buy it.

Maybe a competitor to the Lenovo Vibe Band?

heartbeat monitoring is a bigger must than a display. The phone app will do the magic. What do you do with a little display it is useless, calories, heartbeat and or runkeeper integration would be way way better. My battery lifetime is 300days it could be longer but I charged it. But I did not know it is shower proof.

I use a modified version of the Mi-band software which enables extensive Notification possibilities on the Mi band. E.g. you can set the type of notification (vibration, the duration of the vibration, LED colors, speed of blinking etc) per application. I have a.o. red LED notification for incoming Gmail messages, green for WhatsApp, blue for upcoming Agenda appointments, yellow for incoming calls. This is a KILLER feature! To find it, just google for “Mi Band notifications”
