Xiaomi Redmi S2 could arrive India as the Redmi Y2 on June 7

Days after Xiaomi announced the selfie-focused Xiaomi Redmi S2 in China, the Chinese smartphone maker now looks set to introduce the device to India Market. Xiaomi’s twitter handle has posted a teaser video that indicates it will be unveiling a Selfie smartphone in New Delhi on June 7.

While the video did not reveal the name of the smartphone that will be launched on the said date, the accompanying tweets give it away as a selfie smartphone. The tweet reads “Every step in your life is defined by a selfie. Find yourself, #FindYourSelfie. The BEST selfie smartphone is arriving soon.”

To recall, the XiaomiRedmi S2 was recently unveiled in China as a selfie-focused device, and given that the latest teaser placed special focus on #RealYou smartphone and #FindYourSelfie with the letter highlighted, it is quite possible the Redmi S2 might land India as a member of the Y series – specifically the Redmi Y2.

Powered by a by a 3,080mAh battery, the Xiaomi Redmi S2, the company claims the device is its best Redmi device for selfies ever. It comes fitted with a 16MP front shooter with 2μm pixel size, face unlock, LED flash,  AI portrait mode and an AI beauty mode. The AI algorithm according to Xiaomi does a great job at distinguishing subject and background, resulting in great selfies. Also, the AI beauty mode is capable of highlighting the right facial areas by detecting makeup. On the flip side, the Redmi S2 uses a 12MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture, 1.25μm pixel size, PDAF and a secondary 5MP rear camera.

It was announced back in China at a starting price of CNY 999/ $158 (Rs 10,650), so we assume the Indian price may not exceed the Rs 9,999 price point.
