The face unlock of Google Pixel 4 is now safe 6 months after release

Google has finally released an update for the face recognition system in its Pixel 4 and 4 XL smartphones, which now only works when the user’s eyes are open.

The new update is designed to solve the problem that surfaced literally right after the new Google smartphones went on sale. The first customers noticed that the advanced face recognition system, which was advertised as one of the main features of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, unlocks the device’s display even if the person has his eyes closed, for example, during sleep.

Accordingly, this raised a big question about the security of such smartphones. To smooth out the problem, Google immediately promised to release the update “in the coming months”, but in fact it took the company half a year.

Updating the face recognition system in Pixel 4 and 4 XL adds the option “eyes should always be open” to the device settings, which is enabled by default. However, the user has the ability to disable it. In addition to fixing this problem, the update also fixes a break in sound via Bluetooth.
