WhatsApp is testing a new companion app for the Apple Watch. The new app aims to improve and expand the experience and make its use seamless, even when you're just checking your Apple Watch. The info comes from the WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp Tests New Companion App

The new app allows Apple Watch users to view messages and media in their WhatsApp chat list. It's possible to send new messages without waiting for a notification, and send message reactions using emojis.
In addition, it will be possible to send audio messages and dictate messages using voice input.

It is worth noting that this isn't an independent app or experience. The Apple Watch needs to be connected to an iPhone with WhatsApp installed for users to do everything mentioned above. As we've said, the app is a companion rather than a standalone app. Remember how WhatsApp Web used to work? It might be a similar experience, which depends on the phone.
Regardless of the limitations, this is the right direction for WhatsApp. The app used to have a limited and restrictive approach, but this seems to be a move in the right direction. Hopefully, future updates will make this experience better and better.

The new app is available in Beta via TestFlight

The companion app is available through TestFlight after installing beta version 25.32.10.71 of WhatsApp for iOS. It's unclear when the feature will be available to all users in the App Store.
The wide rollout can take some weeks or even months. WhatsApp does not have a predictable schedule when it comes to rolling new features or implementing new ways of using its app. However, by the time this feature reaches more users, we will be there to cover all the new details.
