Xiaomi has just pulled back the curtain on the Xiaomi 17 (along its older brothers and a tablet sibling), and I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a flagship that doesn’t try to be oversized just for the sake of screen size. At 6.3 inches, this phone is compact but packed with features that many bigger devices struggle to fit. Personally, I love this approach. Holding a device that’s powerful yet doesn’t feel like a brick in your hand is a rare treat in today’s market.

Display and Design: Small but Immersive

The display immediately caught my eye. A flat 1.5K OLED with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate looks sharp and feels smooth in daily use. Xiaomi claims a peak brightness of 3500 nits, and while I haven’t tested it in direct sunlight yet, it does feel exceptionally vibrant indoors. The ultra-narrow bezels, paired with Dragon Crystal Glass, make it immersive and reassuringly sturdy.
One small gripe: the flat screen lacks the subtle curves some users might prefer for edge gestures—but I actually appreciate the clean, distraction-free look. The design manages to feel premium without being flashy, which is rare in a compact flagship.

Performance and Cooling: Flagship Power in a Small Frame

Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 combined with up to 16GB of RAM is no joke. What really impressed me is the cooling system. Many compact flagships overheat when multitasking or gaming, but Xiaomi’s three-dimensional ring design keeps things surprisingly cool. That said, I would have liked to see more details on real-world battery efficiency—7000mAh sounds massive for a small phone, but efficiency under heavy load always makes the difference.

Cameras: Ambitious and Versatile

Photography is ambitious and a little over the top in a good way. The triple 50MP setup, with Leica optics and Xiaomi’s AISP 2.0, seems capable of handling almost any shooting scenario. I personally appreciate the front 50MP camera upgrade; it’s rare to see such detail in selfies, and it could finally make video calls look great in low-light conditions.
My one concern: the telephoto lens has a modest 2.6x zoom, which is useful but not groundbreaking. Still, for most users, it’s more than enough for casual photography.

Battery and Charging: Reliable and Flexible

I also like Xiaomi’s attention to charging and endurance. 100W wired, 50W wireless, and reverse charging give flexibility that you don’t get from many competitors. The silicon-enriched battery promises longevity, which I think will appeal to anyone tired of replacing phones every two years. Personally, I value a phone that lasts not just a day, but a few years without degrading noticeably.

Additional Features: Small Details Matter

Extras like stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, IP68 dust/water resistance, and HyperOS 3 add polish. The design choices are thoughtful too: Snow Mountain Pink and Ice Melt Blue give personality without screaming for attention, and black and white remain classics.
If I had to critique, I’d say that while the compact size is fantastic, it may not satisfy users who crave cinematic experiences on a larger screen. Also, while the cooling system is impressive, we’ll need to see long-term performance under sustained gaming.

Could this be a bold Compact Flagship?

All in all, the Xiaomi 17 is bold in a subtle way. It proves that a phone doesn’t need to be enormous to deliver a premium experience. Personally, I’m impressed with how balanced it feels—powerful, sleek, and surprisingly considerate of daily use. I’m genuinely curious to see how it performs in real-world scenarios and how users respond to a small flagship in a market dominated by oversized devices.
Availability starts in China on September 27, with prices beginning at 4499 yuan for the 12GB/256GB model. For what’s packed into a compact frame, it’s competitive.
