Ecoo E04 Aurora gets 3GB RAM upgrade, and a ‘Aurora Plus’ moniker

Ecoo Aurora E04

Ecoo’s E04 Aurora is arguably the company’s best designed phone. It comes with the very powerful MediaTek MT6752 64-bit, octa-core processor, and has 2GB of RAM to go with the impressive design. What should sound like music to your ears is the fact that the phone now has a ‘Plus’ variant — Ecoo E04 Aurora Plus — which packs in the much needed 3GB RAM.

The rest of the phone remains the same — there’s the same 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p display sitting on top of the frame, 16GB of on-board storage, and 16 mega-pixel / 8 mega-pixel front and rear cameras besides a 3000mAh battery. Basically, its just the amount of RAM — and the model name — that has changed.

Gizchina News of the week

The price too stays at the same sub-$200 point. Comparing it to the Galaxy S6 is somewhat a far-fetched thing to do, but we here at GizChina have a soft corner for Chinese phones. Resellers such as Geekbuying have listed the phone for the same US$190 as the 2GB RAM version, which should mean that Ecoo are replacing the initial model with this one rather than offering a higher-end option alongside it.

Ever see how expensive smartphones with a lot of storage are? I’d like it if Ecoo released a variety of the Aurora Plus with 32gb of memory that’d be great, just so long as its within the price range of the other versions. :'(

And so what? Did they promise to deliver at least two next versions of the OS? If not then it is going to be the same as Zopo ZP980 2G/32G was – powerful device … which stuck on outdated and full of security holes OS version. Customers will pay for hardware resources which won’t be use …

Every since the 3gb plus version released, they’ve all been shipping with the most up to date version of Andoid, Lollipop, also don’t forget that the Aurora series comes rooted out of the box, which I think is sweet as hell. :’P

Awesome! Maybe I’ll sell my 2GB version and buy this one. I am a person who can’t stand ‘newer versions’ of the same he’s having. One of the (many) reasons I would never buy an iPhone :p

But creating the 3GB version is very probably done to position themselves against the Jiayu Advance (also 3GB). Although I am still not sure how much the extra 1GB of RAM is going to help in performance it’s still a good move from Ecoo. 🙂 I personally think that when I need 3GB of RAM, I will have a newer phone anyway. But since I have to order 4 Aurora’s for friends I will make that 3GB-versions so I can cross-test.

So what do you think of the phone? I am trying to figure out which Chinese brands care about their products and deliver high quality components. (Jiayu, Leagoo from my experience)

My Elephone on the other side, looks great, but Bluetooth barely works at all and the phone connection is terrible.

        Hi Mik,

I don’t have much experience with Ecoo yet. The Ecoo Focus was alright, fast and build quality felt fair enough. This Ecoo is a little different; allow chassis and strong plastics. The 2.5D Arc screen gives it a ‘finished’ look. If you would ask if I think some good design meetings have taken place for this phone, I would say yes.

I use bluetooth for my MiBand and that works great. I don’t know anything about the long-term use and quality yet because I only have the phone for 3 weeks now. But the cover stays in place firmly, no sqeecks or cracking-noises when I use the phone: it feels strong enough.

What about the battery? How long it last, power saving mode?Where are you from, does the 4G LTE works in your country?

Told many before. The battery life is more than good. It gets me through the day with very intense use. 6 to 8 hours of calling, hours of e-mails and texting. I also use it to listen to music when I walk. I put it on the charger when I get home, most of the time it’s around 40 – 50 %

4G LTE works as a charm. I must say that most China phones don’t support so many bands. But this device does a lot: FDD-LTE:band 1/3/7/20 (800/1800/2100/2600)
Those bands or used by most of the providers in EU.

Android devices all use micro USB. Micro USB has tiny pins that plug into the cord to charge. This action of plugging in takes high accuracy. Any deviation from this ‘perfect fit’ will take a toll on the Micro USB port. After 3 months of use, my micro USB starts to wiggle. After 6 months, the fit is far from perfect. After 1 year, the fit has a 3 degree deviation to each side. This is why I need wireless charging. This is why I love Apple’s thunderbolt port.

This is off topic, but since you own an ECOO EO4, could you maybe take your take time to answer this question?

Some people have reported that the ECOO EO4 ‘overheats’ when playing intense games such as sky force and have even experienced crashes, which follows by a reboot of the device. Have you ever experienced this?

BTW, this comment is from the Android Authority review of this phone. 🙂

            • Jeep ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ
              March 6, 2015

Wow, that doesn’t look good. I only had that once with my Jiayu G3 years ago. I played Shadowrun on my Ecoo E04 with no problems. The phone gets less hot than any MT6592 chip phone I’ve had. The iOcean G7 and Kingzone K1 could get pretty hot after a long time of gaming but even that wasn’t such a big deal.

I will try Sky Force and Heartstone for you and report back.
Anyone have any games/app they want tested? I prefer free but if it’s really really good, tell me 😉

OK then. A little longer than I wanted but now I tried everything I could. I looked for a list of ‘heavy games’ and after 1 second of Google is found this: http://boostandroid.blogspot.nl/2013/09/heavy-games-for-android.html

I bought and/or downloaded and tried all of the games listed there except CSR racing because I already have Asphalt 8. I also didn’t download Real Football because I couldn’t even get myself to play a football game because of the grater good. Instead of Eternity Warrior 2 I downloaded 3 and Blitz Brigade I didn’t either because it’s multi-play and I thought all the other games were enough for a test.

So, in the last 3 days I tried all the games. Most of them run really smooth, some take a lot of time to load. I didn’t keep track really because the issue seemed to be the temperature and crashes. Well, the phone does get warm after half a hour of gaming. Doesn’t really matter which game you play. But it’s not really that hot. Mine didn’t crash once so I think maybe some apps are causing trouble or some people have faulty devices. Or I am lucky. Both work for me 😉

So, in short..doesn’t get hot enough to be irritating, doesn’t stay cool enough to be a premium brand. It’s okay for me.

Can Ecoo E04 be wirelessly charged? in other words, does it support Qi wireless charging?

It does not. Maybe with external covers like with the Kingzone K1 Turbo. I had that and wireless charging is really useless for me until it becomes integrated in furniture.

That sucks. Do you know any 3Gb RAM phones with wireless charging?

I do not think there are any 3GB phones at the moment with build-in Qi wireless charging. you want it that badly? Never really liked it

I never had those problems but I understand what you say

Your Micro USB ports do not loosen up after repeated charges?

No never had that. I use a lot of different cables. So I do not understand haha

The amazing FlymeOS from Meizu has been ported to the Ecoo E04 Aurora. Did by any chance anyone here try it out already? I lack the time to do all the testing and reviewing that I want (maybe next weekend) so I hope someone else tried it 😀

This reply is a bit late, sorry. Uni has kept me busy. Thank you for your very in depth reply. I’m thinking about buying the ECOO E04 now more than ever, especially because ecoo is now shipping the 3GB ram versions for the same price. Thanks again!

The screen guard should come with the phone and be able to be found on eBay with no prob., a case should come with the phone as well, however funding another one might not be so easy. :/
