Apple May Skip the iPhone 19

Apple's next major iPhone generation, expected in 2027, may not be called the iPhone 19. According to Omdia senior researcher, Apple could jump straight to the iPhone 20 instead, timing the name change to match the iPhone's 20th anniversary since its original 2007 launch.

This would not be the first time Apple has done this. In 2017, Apple skipped the iPhone 9 entirely and released the iPhone X to mark their tenth anniversary. That device brought big changes too, including the removal of the home button and Face ID. If we go by that, then this kind of move in 2027 would make sense.

But just so you know this is not confirmed by Apple, and other analysts disagree. A separate report from Jefferies published in August 2026 still referred to the device as the iPhone 19, meaning that not even insiders have not settled on a single name yet.

The naming question is only a part of this thing. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says, Apple is preparing a glass-centric redesign for this generation, described as the biggest visual change to the iPhone since the iPhone X. Rumors say it will include a more seamless glass body and under-display Face ID, both of which Apple has reportedly struggled to make better for years.

The redesign has also faced conflicting reports about its status. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee said in August 2026 that Apple had scrapped this project. Gurman pushed back on that claim shortly after, stating the redesign remains on track, and a separate leaker has since said the project is still in development. Given how often early hardware plans shift before launch, we might not get anything new for a while.

Since the iPhone 18 series has not even launched yet, any details about a 2027 device remain early and unconfirmed. Still, the pattern is a familiar one for Apple, and the mix of a possible naming change alongside a major redesign gives this rumor more weight than a typical early leak.
