PS5: Sony abandon GDC 2020 and PAX due to coronavirus epidemic

Sony has announced that it will not be at the Game Developer Conference or at PAX East. The brand will not be able to present its new PS5 products.

The Coronavirus epidemic continues to have an effect on events and fairs open to professionals or the general public. After the cancellation of the MWC 2020, several related conferences, and a Facebook conference originally planned for March, it is Sony who warns that the employees of the brand will neither go to PAX East nor to GDC.

PAX East is a public fair around popular culture in the United States. In the field of video games, it is clearly not as important an exhibition as E3, which Sony will not go either, or Gamescom.

It’s still a show where Sony had plans to demonstrate The Last Of Us Part II on PlayStation 4.

The most important thing is above all the cancellation of Sony’s presence at the Game Developer Conference. GDC is an exhibition that is gaining more and more importance from year to year. As the name suggests, this is a professional event for video game creators and therefore a unifying moment for the industry.

It was on this occasion that Google had lifted the veil on its cloud gaming service Google Stadia in 2019. This year, many expect the GDC to be a success because Microsoft and Sony should present several new features of their next-gen consoles to developers.

In the public agenda of GDC 2020, we can read, for example, that Microsoft will give a session on the advantages of integrating audio hardware acceleration within its new generation consoles.

We can also see that a presentation by the developers of Forza Motorsport is in plans. They will show their advances made possible by the new Xbox, and in particular ray tracing.

Sony would normally have had the same kind of sessions to discuss the features of the PS5. The brand will ultimately be absent from GDC 2020. Facebook (Oculus) has also announced its withdrawal from GDC 2020. It remains to be seen if other brands will follow and if the show could, like the MWC, be in turn canceled.
